Since the creation of the drop-in system for Hobie kayaks, we have realized that a smooth paddling hull comes at the price of getting wet when power is applied to the hull. Over time we have contemplated using a vinyl spray rail system as they use on the large Mirage Island kayaks, but they added too many variables and extra parts to get the job done. This is where the concept of adjustable “Wingz” on T-tracks was created as a demo to see if there was a way to control spray coming over the side gunnels and bow. The spray skirts bolt into anodized tracks with stainless fittings and nylon wingnuts. They have notches cut out to adjust how far they extend out to help adjust positioning.
The demo was a success and with a bit of engine lift the hull stayed dry and the engine did not take any water from the hull splash. Eventually, this will be made out of birch hardwood, stained, and sealed, and will have the capability of adding accessories to the “Wingz” themselves. This could include a paddle holder/lock and the fishing pole tip holder.
The Demo V1 video is found below. The next version will be a universal version for the
Hobie Outback and Pro Angler models.
